WEST OSO INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT
The West Oso I.S.D. encompasses approximately 49 square miles in western Corpus Christi, Texas. It is one of five independent school districts within the Corpus Christi city limits.
With approximately 2000 students and 335 employees, the district is an ideal size to be effective in creating an excellent environment for student performance as well as a quality work environment for employees.
The district has one high school (AAA), one junior high, and two elementary schools. The community has been very supportive of WOISD, passing two bond issues in the last several years. A $20 million bond issue was utilized to build a new high school which opened last May, and a $13 million dollar bond issue to build a new elementary school is being implemented. The design for the school has been selected, and construction is estimated to be completed in April, 2010.
The WOSID Board of Trustees was recently selected as TASA’s 2006 Board of the Year, and is outstanding. There are five TASB certified trustees and one master trustee currently serving on the Board. Most of the members have been reelected for several terms.
The district has achieved recognition across the state and made significant progress in student achievement under the leadership of their retiring superintendent, Dr. Crawford Helms. The district salary scale is high in the area, and this helps them recruit and retain outstanding teachers.
West Oso ISD is located on the northwest side of Corpus Christi. The city offers all the benefits of a metropolitan area and is a resort area as well with the beach, the Texas State Aquarium, and the USS Lexington, a famous aircraft carrier of World War II, all located on the bay. Mustang Island and North Padre Island are also located within the city area.
The airport is served by several major airlines and is located ten minutes from the WOISD Central Office Building. Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi and Del Mar College are in the city as well.
West Oso I.S.D. offers an outstanding opportunity for a quality superintendent to become part of a team of excellence. The district is seeking an outstanding professional to lead this great district to meet the challenges of the future.
